Alliance Goes Deeper into Antiracism Work

October 2015 - About 35 representatives of Intertwine Alliance partner organizations, along with a few other wonderful friends from Seattle and beyond, gathered for a 2.5-day workshop led by Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training from Oct. 21-23 at the beautiful Menucha Retreat and Conference Center in the Columbia River Gorge.

With participants representing the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, Meyer Memorial Trust, Portland Parks and Recreation, the City of Portland, Friends of Tryon Creek, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Nature Conservancy and several others, the retreat was a profound experience in learning more about institutional racism and how our coalition, acting collectively, can begin to dismantle it. With a wide-ranging history lesson showing the racial power structure of the U.S. from its founding until now, and an engaging study of what culture, race and white power are all about, participants left with a set of principles and tools for creating change.

The work of dismantling racism in our society is hugely challenging, and progress can seem painfully slow -- but The Intertwine Alliance is committed to being part of the movement to bring equity to our communities.

Thank you to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for sponsoring this powerful workshop.

Prescribing Nature: Incorporating Ecotherapy Methods into Your Clinical Practice

Friday, November 6, 2015 - 9:00am
Center for Community Engagement
Address:
0615 SW Palatine Hill Rd.
Portland, OR 97219
United States

A growing body of evidence demonstrates that direct exposure to nature is good for our psychological and emotional health, yet the focus of most traditional therapies stops at the urban boundary. This workshop focuses on broadening and deepening the practice of psychotherapy by extending the psychotherapeutic context to include the natural world in which we live.

Participants will survey the empirical evidence in support of ecotherapeutic practices, discuss the triadic relationship of therapist, client, and nature, and discuss ethical considerations associated with ecotherapy.

Learning Objectives:
After participating in this workshop, you will be able to integrate ecotherapy practices into your office or agency setting by:

  • Learning specific questions to expand intake interviews that account for the human-nature relationship
  • Making use of nature metaphor and imagery in a therapeutic context
  • Assigning nature-based homework to clients
  • Making use of a Nature Language (an articulation of human/nature interaction patterns) to deepen and strengthen your therapeutic work with clients
  • Understanding the value of adding natural elements into your office setting

Instructor: Patricia Hasbach, Ph.D.
Patricia Hasbach, Ph.D. is a clinician in private practice in Eugene, Oregon; a facultymember at Lewis & Clark College and Antioch University Seattle; and a consultant and trainer on various topics related to the human-nature relationship.

Antiracism Training Provokes Thought, Discussion

July 2015 - About 90 representatives of Intertwine Allliance partner organizations, along with the entire Intertwine Alliance staff and an assortment of non-partner friends, participated in a daylong antiracism training on Thursday, July 16. Led by Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training, the workshop was a deep and thought-provoking look at the definition of culture, the dominant white culture in the U.S., the history and development of racism, and the cause and effects of institutionalized racism.

Participants had a chance to reflect on the progress and challenges of their own institutions' cultures and practices, and begin to imagine steps toward interrupting racist power dynamics.

The Intertwine Alliance is committed to equity and antiracism work, and to providing meaningful opportunities for its partner organizations to join together to effect change. The next training will be a Crossroads 2.5-day workshop going deeper into the history of racism and tools for transformation on Oct. 6-8. Stay tuned for details and registration info.
