Join volunteers, residents and civic leaders in celebrating the grand opening of the NE 72nd Avenue Community Garden, part of Verde’s Let Us Build Cully Park! project.

The Thomas Cully Park project is a collaboration of local organizations working to create a park in Portland’s Cully Neighborhood, a low-income area where residents have limited access to environmental spaces. Intertwine Alliance partner Vigil- Agrimis has developed the Master Plan and Phase One of the project, which incorporates a community-based approach to creating employment and educational opportunities. Verde, together with contractor and workforce partners, constructs Phase One from July 2012 to June 2015. 

Designed by students at Scott School, the NE 72nd Avenue Community Garden is Phase One’s first completed improvement. At 2pm, City Commissioner Dan Saltzman and Scott School Principal Verenice Gutierrez will be speaking along with representatives from: the Portland Parks& Recreation, Vibrant Village Foundation, Northwest Health Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.

Growing Gardens' Garden Planning Workshop

Learn how to get the most out of your veggie garden by planning for a year's worth of successive plantings. This workshop is designed for beginning gardeners and covers timing, plant charts, seed and plant selection, spacing and mapping. Each participant will go home with the know-how and materials to create a customized planting calendar and map.

Presenter Information: Rodney Bender has been the Garden Programs Manager for Growing Gardens for the past eight years. He has a degree in Sustainable Agriculture with an emphasis on urban gardening and garden education. He has been teaching workshops for City of Portland Fix it Fairs, Muddy Boot Organic Festival, Oregon Food Bank, Home Forward, Neighborhood House, Neighborhood Associations and Habitat for Humanity for the past eight years.

Growing Gardens' Grow Your Own Vegetable Starts Workshop

Learn to start healthy seedlings indoors, using low cost methods with big results. The topics covered in this workshop include the materials you'll need to get started, the types of plants that should be started indoors, timing, planting and caring for seedlings, hardening off and using your space efficiently to grow a large quantity of plants. Participants will go home with a planting calendar, a list of resources and a six pack of plant starts.

Presenter Information: Kathy Katz is a local grower who has for the past 25 years been studying small scale/intensive food production models and learning to incorporate them into her own operation. She has spent many years supporting and volunteering for non-profit organizations because she feels it's important to get nutrient dense food to everyone in our community. A longtime contributor to Growing Gardens programs and supporter of their mission to teach the important skill of growing you own food. Currently Kathy is running a small seedling operation, mentoring new gardeners, helping with a few local school gardening projects and working on returning to the small farm her family owns.

Growing Gardens' Cooking With Winter Vegetables Workshop

Learn to make the most of the adundant fall and winter produce we're able to grow in the Willamette Valley. The workshop will cover time-saving ways to prepare and assemble delicious dishes with few ingredients. We'll talk about simple pantry staples to have on hand in order to turn vegetables into delicious weekend night meals with plenty of leftovers to freeze or save for later in the week.

Presenter Information: Katherine Deumling is the owner and operator of Cook With What You Have - A small business in Portland devoted to making cooking a regular, fun, and creative part of people's lives. Katherine teaches cooking classes in her home-bsed school as well as in corporate wellness programs and in private homes. She partners with local farmers markets to promote local produce and works with non-profits and public agencies to empower people to create healthy, delicious meals. She also works with local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farms, creating weekly, customized recipe packets for CSA members. She writes a weekly food blog, Cook with What You Have celebrating the area's food and farmers. Katherine is also the chair of the Board of Slow Food USA and an active member of Slow Food Portland.
