Rallying around the cry, viva la riverlution, people of all ages will gather in downtown Portland along the Willamette River on Saturday, July 9th the second annual Portland Beach Bash and Cleanup. This second annual event, a kickoff to summer, is presented by the Human Access Project (HAP), SOLVE, Chipotle and Maletis Beverage. The Portland Beach Bash and Cleanup is the next step in Human Access Project's grass-roots movement to bring attention and a new perspective towards the Willamette River in downtown Portland. Pick your favorite Beach! Volunteers will meet at either Tom McCall Bowl, Poet's Beach or Audrey McCall Beach at 10:00a.m (please pre-register for the site you want to work at for planning purposes). The goal is to take care of these three downtown beaches and get them cleaned up and ready for swimming and other public use. Come join us! Work will include picking up riprap rocks from the shore and placing them back on the bank ("unrocking the beach), picking up trash, and weeding. Removing the rock from shallow water will also help improve habitat for juvenile salmon. There will be rocks of every shape and size for all ages. Following a few hours of beach cleanup, an after-party will commence with music, food, drinks and other treats - plus free Chipotle food cards for volunteers. The very next day, Sunday, July 10th Human Access Project will host The Big Float, an annual river float and beach party. This year, 3-4,000 river revelers are expected for TBF 6, our 6th annual event. There will be two floating band barges, food carts, beer garden, two 100 foot long slip and slides and an in the water innertube taxi shuttle provided by the Wasabi Dragon Boat Club.

Join Portland's Surfrider Foundation volunteers on the 1st Tuesday of the month for the Northside Green Streets off Alberta! Green Streets is a partnership between the City of Portland and the local Surfrider chapter that aims to keep our streets clean and our local bioswales healthy. Bioswales are those cool mini wetland garden thingies cut into the edge of many streets in town. Our Green Street Stewards, volunteer to clean up litter out of these swales and along the side of the road. This keeps litter out of our local watersheds, and since everything flows downstream, keeps litter out of our oceans. It's a great way to act locally, and make impacts globally! The Surfrider Crew leader will make this volunteer event a fun night to remember, with some cool tunes and sweet treats. Come join us as we work together to keep our waterways clean.
