Down the River Clean Up on the Clackamas River

Join the Clackamas River Basin Council, We Love Clean Rivers, and a flotilla of over 300 volunteers in rafts, kayaks, drift boats, and SCUBA gear to scour the Clackamas River's streambed and banks for trash. Each year, an average of 2-3 tons of garbage is collected, over half of which is recycled. This is the longest-running on-water cleanup event of its kind in Oregon.

All non-motorized paddle crafts may participate and launch at one of four parks: McIver (Lower Boat Ramp), Barton, Carver, and Riverside Park during a rolling start from 7:30-9:30AM. Boaters must have Class II+ whitewater experience, provide all their own gear, shuttle, and wear a life jacket.

On-water and on-land volunteer opportunities are available too! SCUBA divers and free divers are also welcome. Free BBQ featuring 3 Guys Grilling of Damascus and prizes at Barton Park for all volunteers from 3:00-5:00PM.

Float and fill the boat! We Love Clean Rivers and the Clackamas River Basin Council present the 11th Annual Down the River Clean Up on the Clackamas on Sunday, September 8th.

This is an on-river, volunteer clean up. All non-motorized watercrafts are invited! Attracting over 400 people, and typically removing 3-4 tons of trash from the river that provides more than 400,000 residents with fresh drinking water, We Love Clean Rivers and CBRC hopes you'll join them in making this 11th Anniversary a splashing success!

Afterwards, all are invited back to Barton County Park from 3-6 pm for a family friendly celebration with a free BBQ, live music by Tubs of Love, Hopworks beer, booths, games, prizes and a great silent auction.

Oxbow Regional Park is a tracker's paradise in spring, when beavers, otters, fox, mink, mice and deer leave their stories in the sand. With practice, beginners can learn to read the ground like an open book. Seasoned tracker Terry Kem covers basics of track identification and awareness skills needed to watch wildlife at close range. On Saturday, June 8th, 2013, celebrate healthy, active, outdoor fun in your urban national park! Experience all kinds of outdoor activities at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site - your Gateway to the Great Outdoors. Partners from federal, state, and local agencies, nonprofit organizations and the recreation industry are again teaming up to host the fifth annual National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day) to encourage outdoor fun at sites across the nation.


GO Day at Fort Vancouver includes the annual free Brigade Encampment, where costumed interpreters re-enact the springtime return of Hudson's Bay Company fur brigades to Fort Vancouver.


Prime goals of GO Day are reaching currently underserved populations and first-time visitors to public lands, and reconnecting youth to the great outdoors.

Make a Beach in Portland!

This event is going to be a fun opportunity for residents to help increase accessibility to the Willamette River. From 9am to 2pm volunteers will be moving rocks onto the bank at Tom McCall Waterfront Park just south of the Hawthorne Bridge.

Since the 1980's rocks have collected onto the shore and made the area unswimmable and difficult to enjoy even walking to the water's edge. All ages are invited as there are different sizes of rocks to move. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Bring your friends, neighbors and families to enjoy the making of this beach!

Cool your toes in the clear and clean, wild and scenic Sandy River at Oxbow Regional Park. Spend time catching and releasing bugs in the water and looking for animal tracks in the sand with Metro naturalist Deb Scrivens. $5 per vehicle parking fee.

Family Nature Explorers brings kids and adults together for open-ended nature exploration in Metro natural areas. Families meet other families with the same interests in nature and the outdoors. Kids meet other kids who love to touch, smell and study all things natural. Led by Metro naturalists and volunteers, each adventure explores a special theme – but trip leaders seize the moment when nature presents any unexpected learning opportunity. Bring a sack lunch. Children 4 and older are welcome with a parent, grandparent or guardian. $11 per family per program. Register for each program separately; come to one or come to all.
