Take a relaxing walk at Smith and Bybee Wetlands on a long summer evening. Dusk is one of the best times to view wildlife, especially during summer. It’s about the only time mammals such as beaver, muskrat, otter, raccoon, deer and bats can be seen. A Metro naturalist teaches basic techniques of wildlife watching and identification. Bring binoculars or borrow a pair onsite. Suitable for ages 10 and older; participants must be able to be quiet, sneaky and patient. Meet in the parking area on North Marine Drive. At nearly 2,000 acres, Metro’s Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area is the largest protected wetlands within an American city. Most visitors to the natural area are surprised to find beaver, river otter, black-tailed deer, osprey, bald eagles and Western painted turtles living only minutes from downtown Portland.

Clackamas Headwaters Hike

Visit the under-appreciated but spectacular highlands of the Olallie Scenic Area. This area underwent sheet glaciation rather than valley glaciation, resulting in flatter terrain and so many lakes that many have never been named.

Highlights include wide-ranging views with the glaciers of Mount Jefferson only 9 miles distant, glacial striationsin bedrock, wildflowers, and mixed woodlands with  meadows, lakes and cliffs.

The moderate hike of 5.6 miles has a 900 ft. elevation gain on a gentle up and down route. High Point of 5320 ft.

Tour de Clack

Put your pedals to the pavement with the Clackamas River Basin Council! On July 7th at 9 a.m., the CRBC will be hosting the first annual Tour de Clack bicycle ride. Riders will convene at Clackamette Park in Oregon City prior to departing for a 32.7 -mile loop through the watershed.

The route will feature numerous stops and opportunities for riders to learn more about the work of the CRBC and partners, and how everyone can contribute to a healthier watershed. Projects featured along the tour include streamside planting, fish passage barrier removal, habitat improvements such as large woody debris, and current efforts to keep the Clackamas clean. The route also features beautiful rural scenery and several views of the Clackamas and its tributaries.

The event is free for all participants!

Tour de Clack attendees should wear a helmet and bring a snack or lunch to enjoy at a "rest stop" mid-way through the route. Riders will follow the Leave No Trace ethic, and remove any items they may bring with them. Riders without helmets will not be permitted, nor will riders under the age of 16.

Trekking Springville Road with Laura Foster

Journey into the past with local author Laura Foster on this hill-to-bridge trek through Forest Park.  Start down historic Springville Road, a former market road turned park trail, and meander through the isolated Whitwood Court neighborhood at its base.  From there, investigate an intriguing staircase, learn a bit about the old St. Johns ferry and the former community (in the 1860s) of Springville, wander out onto the St. Johns Bridge for river views, and head back uphill via the beautiful Ridge and Hardesty Trails.  

 

Note: This walk is steep, with about 800 feet of elevation gain.
