Rewild Portland is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Our mission is to create cultural and environmental resilience through the education of earth based arts, technology, and traditions. This mission comes to life in the form of educational workshops and programs, community-building events, and ecological restoration. We offer a range of programs from free monthly classes and community building events to children's summer camps to adult workshops.

 

Presentation

Hannes Wingate, a local artist known for creating the "Burnside Nest," will be doing a presentation on his nest projects and how art can connect us with nature. Hannes runs Foreign Service, an art and design practice creating bespoke sculpture, environments and objects for public and private clients worldwide. With 20 years as a vagabond creator Hannes role is crafting stories through spaces and objects with an increasing focus on the critical interface between people and nature. Hannes' work has been exhibited and published in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Spain and the United States in among others New York Times, Architectural Digest and Wallpaper Magazine and Redbull TV. Hannes has a past with leading design firms including Stylt Trampoli and Studio Gang Architects and also teaches wilderness survival skills at the renowned Boulder Outdoor Survival School in Utah. He graduated with honors from the visionary BA Arts and Design program at Central Saint Martins College of Art, in London in 2002. Born in Sweden he currently lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and daughter.

At the silent auction, you can engage in a bidding war for crazy cool stuff and fund another year of awesome programs for Rewild Portland. Items at the silent auction include things like; massages, artwork, gift cards, float tanks, wellness, movie passes, and much more! Stay tuned for a list of items.

Live Music

Nathan Jr. and others will be performing live acoustic set in the evening.

Ancestral Skills Demonstrations

Apart from the lecture and silent auction there will be ancestral skills demonstrations such as; basket weaving, stone tools, and felt-making. Check out the awesome skills that we teach in our classes.

Kids Fishing Festival at Columbia Springs

Kids Fishing Festival features guided fishing for kids ages 5-14, including an hour of fishing for kids with special needs. Kids who fish will get a fishing pole to take home with them.  On Tuesday, March 8th, Michele Crim, Climate Action Program Manager for the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability will present Portland's newly revised Climate Action Plan at TaborSpace in SE Portland.  This event is free and open to the public and is hosted by the neighborhood group, Let's Talk Climate.  

The Climate Action Plan will implement many changes to our infrastructure, including buildings, transportation, consumption and waste, food and agriculture.  How will these changes be implemented?  What role might there be for individual and neighborhood participation?  And how will success be measured?  Join in the conversation!

April is a good month to plant fruit trees and berry bushes. Learn which types are the best to grow in the sun, shade, and containers.  Emphasis on: organic methods, easiest to grow, most productive varieties and techniques, sustainability.

In this informative workshop you will learn the basics of fruit tree and berry selection in order to choose an appropriate variety for your space. This fun workshop will be an opportunity to gain a basic understanding of the various factors one should consider when selecting a fruit tree or berry plant for a given site. We'll do some hands-on planting together and participants will also learn some basic steps for young (0-4 yrs) tree and berry care.

About the instructor: 
Jeffrey Harrison holds an M.A. in literary theory and has tutored writers of all ages at Street Roots, PCC - Rock Creek, and in online services.  His landscape contracting company is in its 7th year of providing consultation and building services to enhance native ecology, beauty, and sustainability.  He has also provided education and leadership to volunteers at Portland Fruit Tree Project for the past 4 years through the Tree Care Teams program.  He enjoys writing poetry and songs to sing and play on his guitar.

This workshop will be hosted by one of our registered tree owners in SE Portland, Pleasant Valley neighborhood.

In this hands-on workshop you will learn the basic techniques of bark grafting (topworking). This method of grafting will allow you to combine different varieties and species of fruit into a single tree during the Spring season. This fun workshop will be an opportunity for you to gain a basic understanding of different grafting methods and when they should be used.

Rick Shory has always worked with plants. In addition to gardening, he has grown and pruned fruit trees, including over 30 years experience grafting. In 2010, he returned to the Pacific Northwest after ten years in Colorado, where he worked in environmental field research and had a home orchard and permaculture. His botanical specialization is grasses.

In this fun, hands-on workshop you will learn the basics of grafting, the most common method of fruit tree propagation. Learn why and how grafting is done, what root stock and scion wood are and which ones to use. You'll get to bring home a fruit tree that you grafted yourself and come away ready to propagate more fruit trees on your own! Additional trees & rootstocks will also be available for purchase at the workshop.

Outreach Team Volunteer Training

Calling all talkers! Help Columbia Slough share its mission with the community.

The position: Outreach volunteers represent the Columbia Slough Watershed Council at farmers markets, paddling festivals, street fairs and outdoor festivals all around North and North East Portland. The Outreach Taskforce shares our mission to foster action to protect, enhance, restore and revitalize the Slough with the community. Volunteers engage event-goers in conversation, field questions about the organization and its events and provide general enthusiasm around all things Slough-related!

Time commitment:  Scheduling is flexible. Volunteers are expected to commit to 1-2 programs per month over the outreach season (May through August) with the option of continuing until Fall. Get to know the position and the details by attending our Outreach Taskforce Orientation on Wednesday, April 13th from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Contact us to get on an email list to stay informed about this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Enthusiastically represent the Council at various festivals and events
  • Engage in conversation with the public around Council events and programs
  • Maintain and care for outreach materials

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong communication, teamwork and leadership skills
  • Able to work in variable outdoor conditions
  • Able to take direction and initiative

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the Columbia Slough Watershed in N and NE Portland
  • Interested in local flora, fauna and water quality issues

Location and Transportation: Programming also takes place at a variety of other locations across the watershed. Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the event site. Sites are generally accessible by car, bus, and bike.

Orientation Part 1 will focus on the logistical aspects of this volunteer team. Orientation Part 2 will include on-water skill building. Volunteers must attend each session.

Scheduling is flexible. Volunteers are expected to commit to 1-2 programs per month over the paddle season (May through August) with the option to continue with Fall programming. Before orientation, volunteers complete a short, informal interview with the Council's Volunteer Coordinator.

*    Assist staff members with canoe and kayak-based educational and recreational activities
*    Monitor and lead volunteers in the paddling area at events
*    Facilitate safe, inclusive on-water activities with kids and adults
*    Perform routine maintenance on boats and paddling equipment

*    Novice to advanced canoeing and kayaking skills
*    Strong communication, teamwork and leadership skills
*    Able to work in variable outdoor conditions, sometimes cold and/or rainy and dark
*    Able to take direction and initiative, provide leadership when needed

*    Able to lift 30 pounds overhead
