In the third installment of the Portland edition of ONDA's High Desert Speaker Series, Dr. Tom Connolly shares his experiences as one of Oregon's preeminent cultural anthropologists.

From incipient agriculture to paleoenvironmental studies and geoarchaeology to cultural resource management, Dr. Connolly has a special understanding of the high desert's unique archaeological features.

Archaeological work over the past two decades, and continuing study of museum collections made decades ago, are providing new insights on Oregon's first peoples. Dr. Connolly outlines recent studies that have pushed back evidence for the earliest human presence in the region to about 15,000 years ago, and reviews museum specimens for a clearer understanding of the timing and range of key ancient cultural traditions.

Join us as Dr. Connolly takes us on a journey thousands of years in the making.

The event will take place at Portland's First Congregational Church, 1126 SW Park Avenue in the Park Blocks. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited; please register on Eventbrite HERE.

This is a skill we teach year after year: how to turn acorns from bitter nuts, into a delicious flour, and how to keep restore those ecosystems that produce acorns. Come learn more, share what you know, crack and grind some acorns, taste a few treats made from acorn flour, and take home a baby Oregon White Oak to plant!

This month's theme is Ivy Baskets. Come pull some ivy and learn how to weave a quick little basket. No experience necessary! This is a great one to work on with children. We'll be meeting at the Children's Playground Shelter on Sherwood st. (formerly called the Elephant House). Bring some garden shears and thick leather gloves.

This month's theme is Stinging Nettle and Other Spring Greens. In late winter and early spring, many edible greens begin to emerge. Let's celebrate them by learning about them, how to encourage their growth, what roles they play in ecology, how to process and prepare them, and of course, how to eat them and what nutritional value they bring! Come to learn and share what you know. Find us at Picnic Area F, furthest parking lot, on the bike path just passed the bathrooms on the Columbia River side.

Looking for a way to get outside and make a difference in your community? Join Friends of Nadaka for our Community Planting Event to restore a healthy habitat at Nadaka Nature Park. Volunteers will be planting native shrubs like Oregon Grape, Thimbleberry, and Snowberry. Native plantings help filter pollutants, provide shade, and improve fish and wildlife habitat. Tools, plants, gloves, and light refreshments will be provided. Dress to work in natural areas: long pants, warm cloths, and closed-toe sturdy shoes. Please bring a water bottle and a friend! Activities include: Invasive Plant Removal, Native Planting.
