No Ivy Day at Gateway Green

Join us October 13, 2012 from 9am to noon at Gateway Green for No Ivy Day. Gateway Green’s 12 wooded acres are currently dominated by English ivy, an aggressive and invasive specie. Help build on previous volunteers efforts by saving trees in immediate danger of being killed by ivy. Volunteers will focus on “Girdling”, cutting a solid ring of the ivy at both knee height and chest height, and pulling ivy away from the base of trees.

Directions

  • If you take MAX, the red, blue and green lines run directly to the Gateway transit stop.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle access is available from the northern and southern edges via the I-205 multi-use path.
  • From downtown Portland - take I-84 east to exit 7 Halsey St., keep left on ramp, take slight right onto NE Halsey St., 1st right onto NE 102nd Ave., right onto NE Pacific St. to park and ride parking lot.
  • I-205 south toward I-84/Portland/Salem, take Glisan St. exit 21A, left onto NE Glisan St., left onto NE 102nd Ave., left onto NE Pacific to park and ridge parking lot.

Convene at Gateway Green, near the south end. (Walk north from Gateway MAX Station toward Rocky Butte); follow the Gateway Green signs.

Free Basketry Workshop

Tired of seeing English Ivy take over natural areas and push out native plants? Wish it could be used to make something both beautiful and useful? You’re in luck! Rewild Portland will be holding a special ivy pull and ivy basketry workshop during Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge's annual celebration, BirdFest. The restoration event will be on the Saturday, October 13th, on the Carty Unit of the Refuge. From 9am to 11am, join the folks from Rewild Portland as they pull English Ivy and help restore refuge habitat. From 12 - 4, they will be teaching workshop participants how to turn the ivy pulled into artful and utilitarian baskets. Both the pull and the workshop are on a drop in basis, so feel free to join for the pull, the workshop, or both!

This half-day forum on community-driven greenspace projects will be held at Ventura Elementary School.

What is it?

A half-day forum to share information and strategies on community driven neighborhood park, natural area, and other greenspace projects.

An opportunity to inspire and educate new community greenspace advocates.

Provide a forum to discuss strategies for effective and successful community organizing, outreach to diverse communities, fund raising, effective collaboration with local governments, the media, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

Who should attend? Individuals interested in learning how to develop and implement a neighborhood green space projects, including trails, community gardens, natural area acquisition and restoration, or other public greenspace efforts.

Stewardship Saturday at Smith Presbyterian Church!

The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is looking for some Sloughper Heroes like yourself to help us out in the Columbia Slough Watershed! We have several volunteer opportunities: removing invasive weeds, picking up litter, maintaining plantings, flag new plants for visibility and plant native species within the Watershed.

A few Saturdays each month, staff from the Watershed and wonderful volunteers, get together, get their hands dirty and really make serious improvements on the Watershed. If you care about your environment, and want to have an awesome time volunteering, think about coming out! These Stewardship Saturdays, are a great time to learn more about the watershed that contains 170,000 people, 175 different species of birds, 26 species of fish and 28 different species of mammals!

Join Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church community members and Columbia Slough Watershed Council staff as they maintain a beautiful two-acre natural habitat area along Fairview Creek.This site has been under restoration for seven years and has seen dramatic improvements.Volunteer hands are needed to keep the English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, and other weeds at bay, however, so that this site can thrive. We will gather in the church parking lot to brief volunteers and distribute tools. Tools and refreshments will be provided.

Fall into Fun - Tree Planting Season Kicks Off!

Dig in with SOLVE every Saturday this fall at Team Up restoration sites across the Portland-metro area. Over time, this work will improve water quality, create wildlife habitat, and store carbon to slow climate change.

  • Projects are Saturday mornings from 9 am - 12 pm or 1 pm, rain or shine. All tools, gloves and supplies will be provided.

Ancient forest mushroom class

Join mycologist Gary Slone for a two-hour class that ends with a walk on an easy trail in the old-growth forest at Oxbow Regional Park. Gary discusses mushroom classification and edibility, and then participants gather, identify and compare specimens. Beginning and experienced "shroomers" ages 12 and older are welcome. Bring your own mushroom specimens for ID. Meet at Alder Shelter (picnic area "A"). Registration and payment of $11 per adult or family required in advance.
