Have fun and help out at Columbia Springs! We will work on several projects around our site and end with a guided nature walk. Projects may include gardening, painting, trail maintenance, and more. Identifying Animal Tracks

Animal tracks are everywhere but how do you tell who made them?  The Animal Track Literacy Project teaches you the language scientists use to describe tracks through drawing, coloring and measuring exercises.   Collect data on a series of mystery tracks and then identify them yourself using a special tool called a dichotomous key.  We will also study plaster casts of animal tracks collected at Jackson Bottom Wetlands and other locations. This interactive class is designed for adults and children 8 years and older to explore together how to identify animal tracks.  Through a series of drawing and coloring exercises learn to recognize the parts of a track and how to measure length and width.  Then draw your own mystery tracks using special stencils and figure out their identity by asking key questions.  We will also look at plaster casts of animal tracks collected at Jackson Bottom Wetlands and other locations.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.
