Incredible Edibles Plant Sale 2016
From seedlings to supper, grow your own!
Join the campaign for healthy eating with organic veggie, fruit and herb starts for your home garden at the fifth annual Multnomah County Master Gardeners' Incredible Edibles Plant Sale on Saturday, April 30, 10 am to 4 pm, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1624 NE Hancock St., Portland.
Plant starts from the Incredible Edibles Plant Sale are local, organically-grown varieties specifically selected because they thrive in Pacific Northwest conditions. So when you "pick up something for dinner," you'll be harvesting nutritious, fresh-picked goodness for your table! Look for a luscious array of both heirlooms and hybrids among the proven varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuces, herbs, edible flowers and more.
OSU Extension-trained Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand so you can 'Get the Real Dirt' on plant problems, pest control and other gardening questions.
'Plant. Grow. Eat.' workshops are scheduled throughout the day to inspire and instruct, with guest chefs and Master Gardeners sharing tried and true tips for the best ways to grow your own food -- and bring it to the table. The Incredible Edibles Sale is the place for new and veteran gardeners, with lots of information and helpful Master Gardeners to launch you successfully growing your own food.
Even the littlest sprouts can join the fun at the Kids Grow station with hands-on garden activities and discoveries.
Bop while you shop to lively local musical entertainment. Eat, drink and be merry at Thrive Sauce and Bowls, Salvador Molly's and Nossa Familia Coffee.
Find inspiration from artist Jessica Soliel of A Little Sun, who returns with her "illustrations that feel like a hug," and Joe Wirtheim, who will be on hand with his retro "Victory Garden of Tomorrow" shirts and posters celebrating green urbanism and community building.
Proceeds from the sale further the work of the Multnomah County Master Gardeners, whose mission is to support the OSU Extension Service Master Gardener program and to educate the public about all aspects of successfully and sustainably growing and caring for plants.
You've seen Multnomah County Master Gardener volunteers at your neighborhood Farmers Market and other community events. Master Gardener volunteers also:
*Donate produce from the Multnomah County Community Demonstration Garden to local food banks
*Host a monthly Speaker Series, free and open to the public, where guest horticulture experts share their knowledge on a range of relevant gardening and environmental topics
*Provide horticulture lessons to young people being treated at Doernbecher Children's Hospital
*Instruct Seed to Supper classes in partnership with the Oregon Food Bank
*Teach gardening methods that support successful gardening and environmental stewardship at area schools, libraries, parks, and community gardens throughout Multnomah County

Bud Grafting
Saturday July 16th, 10am - 1pm
SE Portland, Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood
In this hands-on workshop you will learn the basic techniques of bud grafting (budding). This method of grafting will allow you to combine different varieties and species of fruit into a single tree more quickly and with greater success rates than other grafting methods. This fun workshop will be an opportunity for you to gain a basic understanding of different bud grafting methods and when they should be used.

About the instructor:
Rick Shory has always worked with plants. In addition to gardening, he has grown and pruned fruit trees, including over 30 years experience grafting. In 2010, he returned to the Pacific Northwest after ten years in Colorado, where he worked in environmental field research and had a home orchard and permaculture. His botanical specialization is grasses.

Summer Pruning is a great time to de-invigorate an overgrown tree and encourage the continued development of fruiting laterals. This fun workshop will be an opportunity to gain a basic understanding of the different types of pruning cuts and when these cuts should be used.

About the instructors:
Ben Gibson has been working with trees since he was a skidder operator as a teenager. Since 2008, he has been working in the urban arboriculture field. He has taken on the roles of ISA Certified Climbing Arborist, Crew Lead, and Salesman. In April 2013, he started his own small business as "The Tree Nerd." This allows his to focus on the beauty and long term health of trees. He specializes in ornamental pruning of all kinds, and is happy to share his passion and knowledge of trees with any who will listen.

When: April 17, 2016
What: The Cathlapotle Plankhouse re-opens for the 2016 season on April 17th, 2016. The season will kick off with a special second Sunday event featuring the latest in Cathlapotle Village archaeology, artifacts excavated from the Cathlapotle site on display, and guided hikes highlighting spring and a family friendly hike focusing on Refuge Wildlife. The Plankhouse will be open for visitors from 12pm-4pm, and there will be kids' activities as well.
**The Cathlapotle Plankhouse will now be open most weekends from 12pm-4pm. Every second Sunday of the month the Plankhouse will host a special event with speakers, guided hikes, and children's activities. For more information on the upcoming events, visit www.ridgefieldfriends.org.**
12pm: Naturalist Lead Family Hike
Join a Naturalist on the trail exploring the wildlife that live at the Refuge. This hour long walk will meet at the Plankhouse, and is geared towards families. Meet in front of the Plankhouse.
1pm: Presentation "What's new at Cathlapotle? Lots!"
Cathlapotle is one of the best preserved Chinookan Village sites along the Lower Columbia River, making it a tremendous window into the lives of Chinookan Peoples before contact with Euro-Americans in the early 1800s. Ken Ames, Professor Emeritus at Portland State University and one of the leading scholars in Lower Columbia River Archaeology will share the latest findings to come out of Cathlapotle, and connect these stories to the lands we all call home.
2pm: Spring Ethnobotany Hike
Join a Refuge Naturalist for a walk on the Oaks to Wetlands Trail discussing spring plants and their relationship with Chinookan culture. Participants should be prepared for a 2 mile hike on moderately uneven terrain. Meet at the Plankhouse.
12pm - 4pm: Plankhouse Tours and Children's Activities
Tour the Plankhouse on your own or guided by our experienced volunteers. Children's activities will be available as well.
Cost: Refuge admission is $3 per vehicle

TOMS Portland is celebrating Earth Day 2016 by pampering the Pearl District Neighborhood with a litter pickup! Join us in cleaning up our city, having a great time and connecting to the community. Join in Portland Parks & Recreation removing invasive non-native species, including English ivy, clematis, and Himalayan blackberry. Invasive species removal restores wildlife habitat and to encourages native species regeneration to prevent erosion and water run-off. Please wear long thick pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy shoes. Bring a water bottle, rain gear and sunhat. Instruction, tools, gloves, water, coffee/tea and KIND Snacks provided. This is a family-friendly event and all ages are welcome but children must be supervised by an adult. Activities include: Invasive Plant Removal.
