Tree planters needed in SE Portland on Saturday, Dec 13th!  All are welcome!  We'll be planting more than 250 (!) large 8-12' - trees in several neighborhoods -- and need your help!

We'll be planting in the neighborhoods of Brentwood-Darlington, Mt. Scott-Arleta, Woodstock, Brooklyn, Sellwood-Moreland, and Eastmoreland.

Please arrive by 8:45am to register and be assigned to a crew. The planting starts promptly at 9:00am. We provide gloves and tools, so all you need to do is show up dressed for the weather and wearing sturdy shoes or boots. No experience necessary. We'll also have light breakfast refreshments and coffee / hot chocolate available. Following the planting there is a warm potluck lunch provided by the hosting neighborhood groups to all volunteers -- we hope you can stay for it!

Beaver Creek Planting Day

This event is part of the 2014 Family Volunteer Day. Join us on Saturday to plant native trees and shrubs to improve habitat and water quality. We will reuse coffee bags as weed barrier. We will install beaver caging. Tools and gloves will be provided on site. Drinking water will also be provided but feel free to bring your own water bottles. This can be messy work, so please wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. After the planting a free bio-engineering class will take place on site, and all volunteers are welcome join!

The bioenginnering field day will introduce participants to basic techniques. Participants will hear an introduction outdoors at Glenn Otto Park and then walk up Beaver Creek where several types of bioengineering techniques will be installed, stabilizing the streambank by adding vegetation. Participants will review past project examples, receive handouts and a copy of Restoring Rare Native Habitats in the Willamette Valley. Please dress for the weather and working outdoors

Join us every Wednesday from noon - 1 pm for Lunch with the Birds! Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. A few pairs of loaner binoculars are available. We meet rain or shine and spend our time outside. This 59-acre community park provides a vast range of recreation opportunities for visitors. Paved paths lead the way through the different developed and natural areas of the park. Soft-surface paths lead further into wetland and wooded areas around the Tualatin River. Benches and picnic tables can be found throughout the park. The playground, tennis courts, wading stream, rhododendron garden, several ponds and large lawn areas provide a wide range of options for play and relaxation. The park can be accessed on the west side for parking and also off of SE River Road on the north side of the park. Accessible restrooms and several drinking fountains are available.

Explore Sauvie Island in search of magnificent eagles, hawks and falcons that spend the winter here. On this special day devoted to raptors, naturalists and hawk experts host activities at four locations around the island. Enjoy guided bird viewing, meet live raptors up close and see hawk identification displays. Free hot drinks and donuts will be available in the morning.

Check in at Kruger's Farm Market, and receive a one-day Sauvie Island Wildlife Area parking permit, event guide, birding map, checklist, and picture handouts to help identify birds of prey. Allow about three hours to visit all the stations. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather. Digging Deep: Exploring the Region's Geologic History

Join Metro naturalists Sheilagh Diez and Ashley Conley on a trip through the geologic history of the Metro region. This two-part class begins with an evening filled with maps and stories to illustrate basic regional geology (Thurs. 1/15, 6-8:30pm at Lucky Labrador Hawthorne Pub, 915 SE Hawthorne).  Then take a day-long journey to Metro natural areas and parks for a hands-on investigation of local geologic features (Saturday 1/17, 9am-4pm, begin at Canemah Bluffs, other sites include Mount Talbert and Newell Creek Canyon). Transportation provided from Canemah Bluff Natural Area. Age 15 and older.
