Make a lasting difference -- plant trees with Friends of Trees!

Please arrive around 8:45am to be registered and assigned to a crew. The planting will start promptly at 9:00am. We provide breakfast snacks and hot chocolate/coffee, as well as gloves, tools and guidance. Please come dressed for the weather and wearing sturdy shoes and get ready to have fun!

We are very happy to continue our partnership with the City of Hillsboro and Clean Water Services. This is part of the Tree for All Campaign, CWS' ambitious endeavor to plant 2 million trees in the Tualatin River Basin! This is Friends of Trees second year at this site, which is near Rock Creek, a tributary to the Tualatin River and home to both of our native turtle species!

Tired of seeing English Ivy take over natural areas and push out native plants? Wish it could be used to make something both beautiful and useful? You’re in luck! Rewild Portland will be holding a special ivy pull and ivy basketry workshop during Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge's annual celebration, BirdFest. The restoration event will be on the Saturday, October 13th, on the Carty Unit of the Refuge. From 9am to 11am, join the folks from Rewild Portland as they pull English Ivy and help restore refuge habitat. From 12 - 4, they will be teaching workshop participants how to turn the ivy pulled into artful and utilitarian baskets. Both the pull and the workshop are on a drop in basis, so feel free to join for the pull, the workshop, or both!

Stewardship Saturday at Smith Presbyterian Church!

The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is looking for some Sloughper Heroes like yourself to help us out in the Columbia Slough Watershed! We have several volunteer opportunities: removing invasive weeds, picking up litter, maintaining plantings, flag new plants for visibility and plant native species within the Watershed.

A few Saturdays each month, staff from the Watershed and wonderful volunteers, get together, get their hands dirty and really make serious improvements on the Watershed. If you care about your environment, and want to have an awesome time volunteering, think about coming out! These Stewardship Saturdays, are a great time to learn more about the watershed that contains 170,000 people, 175 different species of birds, 26 species of fish and 28 different species of mammals!

Join Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church community members and Columbia Slough Watershed Council staff as they maintain a beautiful two-acre natural habitat area along Fairview Creek.This site has been under restoration for seven years and has seen dramatic improvements.Volunteer hands are needed to keep the English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, and other weeds at bay, however, so that this site can thrive. We will gather in the church parking lot to brief volunteers and distribute tools. Tools and refreshments will be provided.

Fall into Fun - Tree Planting Season Kicks Off!

Salmon homecoming at Metro's Oxbow Regional Park

Spicy scents of autumn trees, giant golden leaves on maples and the silvery chatter of American dippers in the river. These are the smells, sights and sounds of Oxbow Regional Park in the autumn. Witness the return of wild salmon to one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier rivers – the glacier-fed Sandy – just 45 minutes from downtown Portland.

Naturalists are on hand at the river’s edge to help spot spawning salmon and interpret their behavior and life cycle. Special salmon-viewing glasses are available on loan. Salmon viewing proceeds rain or shine. The trail is unpaved and fairly level; wear good walking shoes. Inquire at the entry booth for starting location of the salmon viewing then follow the signs to the salmon! Twelve miles of trails invite you to explore an ancient forest with centuries-old trees and ridges and ravines carved by volcanic and glacial flows. The park also offers a wooded campground, reservable picnic shelters, playgrounds, equestrian trails, and a number of environmental education opportunities.
