Interested in the animals that live on Mt Hood?  Love to snowshoe?  Join the Wolverine Tracking Project and help search for rare carnivores and other wildlife on Mt Hood.  Develop animal tracking skills, enjoy group trips in a winter wonderland, and help increase knowledge of rare wildlife.  

There are 4 sets of training dates to choose from.  Second set of training dates:

Animal Tracking

Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve

Dog or cat? Rodent or weasel? Deer, elk or moose? Is that a bear? Correctly identifying animal tracks depends on keen observation and a basic understanding of the track characteristics for each animal group. In this class we use plaster casts, drawings, stencils and time in the field to learn how to identify the footprints of the common mammals of North America.

Life-size stencils of many different kinds of animal tracks, fabric paints, brushes and directions are provided; bring your own light-colored cotton or cotton-blend tee-shirt or other item to decorate.

Bring a sharp knife and hand pruners and keen ears and eyes for paying close attention to the teaching demonstrations. Learn the basic skills you need to weave while emphasizing the magic of the process and deepening your appreciation for the incredible strength and vitality of the plants in our area. Basket Weaving with English Ivy

Saturday, November 7, 2015 - 10:00am to 4:00pm
City of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department

In this 1-day workshop learn to weave a simple basket out of the invasive species Hedera helix, otherwise known as English Ivy. Help restore and maintain native habitat by removing the ivy from a local park and then recycling the vines into a functional work of art. In the morning we will learn how to gather ivy, how to prevent it from growing back, and begin weaving our baskets. The afternoon will focus solely on weaving the baskets.

Participants will harvest and process their weaving materials (English Ivy roots) from a local park, then learn basic French & English basket weaving techniques in the classroom and take home a finished product.

Hawk Identification Field Trip

Hawk Identification Field Trip - you must have attended the Thursday night class to be on the field trip.

TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED BY CITY OF HILLSBORO. LIMITED TO 6 PARTICIPANTS. A TWO HOUR DRIVE ONE WAY (LAST 2 MILES ON ROUGH ROAD) AND A HALF MILE HIKE UPHILL IS INVOLVED IN REACHING THE HAWKWATCH SITE.  TRIP DEPARTS FROM HILLSBORO, MEETING PLACE TO BE ANNOUNCED.Fall is a perfect time to learn about hawks and other raptors, also known as birds of prey.
