Native Pollinators Jackson Bottom Wetlands

Learn about the bees and wasps found at the Jackson Bottom Wetlands during a 2014 research project. The nesting behaviors of mason bees and four other types of bees, as well as two types of beneficial wasps will be discussed. The Jackson Bottom Wetlands is one of five sites in an extensive research project, being conducted by Ron Spendal and initially designed to document the presence of the grass carrying wasp in western Oregon. Fall Shorebird Class at Jackson Bottom

Shorebirds are a challenging group of birds to identify. Three or four species breed at Jackson Bottom and many more species pass through on migration, beginning as early as July and continuing into October. Experienced birder, author and teacher, John Rakestraw teaches you the basic principles of shorebird identification in this combination class and field trip. The fall shorebird migration is a drawn out affair and this class is a great way to be prepared to follow it! Class size limited to 15 participants. Bring binoculars, field guide, spotting scope if you have, be prepared to walk one mile. Adults and interested youth accompanied by an adult.

Advanced Dragonfly Identification Workshop

The Sunday workshop is perfect as a continuation of Saturday's introductory class or for the already experienced odonate watcher.  This class explores the resources available for identification of odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) and the critical examination of photos and specimens of adults and nymphs. A field trip into the Preserve follows. Instructor Jim Johnson has studied and taught classes on dragonflies and damselflies of the Pacific Northwest for twenty years.  Open to Adults and interested teens accompanied by an adult.

MAX Birding Trip

We venture east to the Tualatin Hills Nature Park and then to Washington Park where we get off the train in the middle of a mountain range! We will board the MAX train at the Hatfield Government Center MAX Station, Stop ID 9848, and head east towards Merlo Rd / SW 158th station. Then to the Washington Park station in the middle of the Tualatin Mountains. Some time spent walking and birding at each stop and then we return. Bring lunch, money for a day pass ($5 adult / $2.50 under 18), binoculars and dress for the weather.

Yoga with the Birds @ Jackson Bottom Wetlands

Let Yoga with the Birds make you soar on summer mornings! Feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and balanced in the invigorating atmosphere of Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve. Class takes place on the covered deck, open to the great outdoors. The deck faces east and receives full morning sun. Please bring your own mat, towel, and water bottle. Arrive dressed to begin class and be prepared for possibly cool mornings. Certified yoga instructor Cindy Mason teaches this class, suitable for beginner to intermediate levels.  After each class a short, half-hour, meditative bird walk will be offered by Jackson Bottom Wetlands staff for those who wish to participate. Class-size limited to 15.  Two offerings, each offering consists of 8 classes over 4 weeks.

Our spacious, covered deck is on the east side of the education building and receives full morning sun. Come prepared for possibly cool mornings as well as warm, sunny mornings. Bring your own mat and other yoga materials. Facilities do not open until 10am so please arrive all ready for class. For those interested in prolonging their state of yoga bliss there will be a 30 minute meditative bird walk from 9 - 930am.

Great Blue Heron Week @ Jackson Bottom Wetlands

Celebrate Great Blue Heron Week and join bird expert Rick Balazs to view the Owl Woods heron colony. Thirty to fifty pairs of herons nest in this stand of Douglas Fir trees. Rick has spent hundreds of hours monitoring the birds over the years and knows the behaviors and antics of nesting herons very well. Meet at the Education Center at 9am. Be prepared for a two mile (round-trip) leisurely walk over mostly flat terrain. Dress for the weather, the trails may be muddy. Bring binoculars. A variety of other birds including bald eagles, osprey and songbirds may be seen. Free. A donation of $2 / person to the Education Center is welcomed. Group size limited to 15.
