Join us every Wednesday from noon - 1 pm for Lunch with the Birds! Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. A few pairs of loaner binoculars are available. We meet rain or shine and spend our time outside. This event is free for all ages and you do not need to pre-register.  All four January dates (7, 14, 21, 28) are held at the North Viewing Station at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve.  The North Viewing Station is located about 1 mile north of the Education Building, at the intersection of SW Wood Street and S. First Avenue (also known as Highway 219).  Parking is on the east side of First Avenue.

Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is a facility of the City of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department bordering the Tualatin River in SW Hillsboro. Features include: 635 acres of wetlands undergoing an active restoration program and riparian forest with four miles of walking trails. Over 200 species of birds recorded. A designated Important Bird Area for wintering waterfowl. Open dawn to dusk. Pets are not allowed. Education Center Building open 10am-4pm daily: real bald eagle nest, interpretive displays, nature store, classroom, restrooms.

Winter Raptors Field Trip

The mild climate of our area attracts birds of prey that spend the winter here. It's warm, there's food, why go further south? On a good day you can find ten species of raptor in Washington County, if you know where and what to look for.  Transportation is provided for this outing in search of eagles, falcons, hawks and harriers. We depart from the Hillsboro Civic Center Plaza, 150 E Main Street, where you can arrive by MAX, bus or park your vehicle in the nearby free parking garage. This trip is limited to 7 participants so don't wait to register!

Sandhill Cranes Field Trip

Elegant, majestic and talkative - thousands of Sandhill Cranes spend time on Sauvie Island each winter. Transportation is provided for this outing to view wild cranes feeding, flying and being cranes - what's that all about? Chances of seeing Bald Eagles and other raptors are also very good. Ducks, geese, swans! Diving ducks, puddle ducks, cackling geese! Canada geese, tundra swans, trumpeter swans!  Trying to figure them all out can drive you crazy! Come to this class to get started on identifying a mallard from a wigeon and a teal from a merganser, or from another teal for that matter! After an indoor presentation of informative slides we venture out to view wild waterfowl and practice what we learned.

This 59-acre community park provides a vast range of recreation opportunities for visitors. Paved paths lead the way through the different developed and natural areas of the park. Soft-surface paths lead further into wetland and wooded areas around the Tualatin River. Benches and picnic tables can be found throughout the park. The playground, tennis courts, wading stream, rhododendron garden, several ponds and large lawn areas provide a wide range of options for play and relaxation. The park can be accessed on the west side for parking and also off of SE River Road on the north side of the park. Accessible restrooms and several drinking fountains are available.

Raptor Road Trip

Explore Sauvie Island in search of magnificent eagles, hawks and falcons that spend the winter here. On this special day devoted to raptors, naturalists and hawk experts host activities at four locations around the island. Enjoy guided bird viewing, meet live raptors up close and see hawk identification displays. Free hot drinks and donuts will be available in the morning.

Check in at Kruger's Farm Market, and receive a one-day Sauvie Island Wildlife Area parking permit, event guide, birding map, checklist, and picture handouts to help identify birds of prey. Allow about three hours to visit all the stations. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather. Sponsored by the Audubon Society of Portland, Metro, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and HawkWatch International.   No advance registration is required. $10/vehicle upon arrival, cash only please.

Nyberg wetland is part of a network of wetlands along the Nyberg Creek Greenway in Tualatin. These preserves work together to deter flooding, improve water quality, prevent erosion, and provide habitat to beaver, great blue heron, amphibians, and many other wetland wildlife species. Come join us as we work to restore habitat this special place. Bring your binoculars for wildlife viewing!

Family Fun on the Farm

Join us for a day of fun and learning at Family Fun on the Farm day, brought to you by Metro. School is out for the day and you're invited to Sauvie Island Center's first-ever Family Farm Day on Tuesday, November 11th from 10 am to 1 pm. We'll explore the 16-acre Sauvie Island Organics farm and the grounds of Howell Territorial Park while learning about food, farming and the land. Our staff will guide you and your family through an exploration of our curriculum, designed for elementary school-aged children, including:

-Soil Exploration. Dig in and learn about healthy soil.
-Seed to Harvest. Plant, tend and harvest the Grow Lunch Garden.
-Healthy Snacks. Harvest fresh veggies and use them to create yummy snacks!
-Plant Parts Investigation. Explore the farm and plants we can eat.
-Wildlife & Food web. Who else has been foraging on the farm?
-Pollination Station. Meet these hard-working farm friends.

The Sauvie Island Center operates on the grounds of the Sauvie Island Organics farm and the adjacent Howell Territorial Park managed by Metro. Coming of the bridge on to Sauvie Island, continue straight for about one mile, and turn right on to Howell Park Rd. For exact, turn by turn directions, Google Howell Park. Once on Howell Park Road, take the first left into the large, grassy parking lot and park. Then proceed up the hill to the big, red barn.
