From your local squirrel to the occasional wandering mountain lion, learn about the many mammals that call Washington County home - how to recognize them, fascinating tidbits of their natural history and how to identify their tracks.  Ages 12 -- Adult.

Features include: 635 acres of wetlands undergoing an active restoration program and riparian forest with four miles of walking trails. A pollinator garden with active mason bee nests, benches and sheltered overlook of preserve. A designated Important Bird Area for wintering waterfowl. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded. Trails are open dawn to dusk. Pets and bicycles are not allowed on the trails. Education Center Building open 10am-4pm daily: real bald eagle nest, interpretive displays, nature store, classroom, restrooms.

Cranes & Eagles of Sauvie Island

Two of the largest birds around are plentiful and easy to observe on Sauvie Island, where the Willamette and Columbia Rivers meet. Sandhill Cranes and Bald Eagles congregate here during the winter, as do many species of waterfowl that we are also likely to see. Transportation is provided for this guided wildlife tour. We depart from the Washington County Fairgrounds MAX station where you can arrive by train, bus or park your car.  Ages 12 -- Adult.

This is a field trip to Sauvie Island. Van transportation provided departing from and returning to the Washington County Fairgrounds MAX station.
Venue Details: 
Sauvie Island encompasses 14,000 acres of wetlands, sloughs, forests and fields that are managed by Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. It is an Important Bird Area for its wintering waterfowl, raptors and cranes. Wildlife viewing in winter months can be spectacular.

Owling Field Trip

Venture forth into the night to listen for and spot local owls. We begin near dusk and continue until after dark in search of several species such as Pygmy, Saw-whet, Great-horned, Barred and Short-eared owl. The Tualatin River basin is home to tens of thousands of waterfowl during the mild Pacific Northwest winter. Learn how to identify the most common species of ducks, geese & swans. An indoor session is followed by a field trip onto the Preserve with binoculars and field guides (provided) and a spotting scope. Local author and instructor, John Rakestraw, teaches this class.  Ages 12 -- Adult.

Phillips Creek December Community Planting Day

Phillips Creek, located near 82nd ave and the Clackamas Town Center Mall has been a SOLVE site for the past eight years. The creek historically has been a dumping ground and largely ignored by the community. Volunteers have removed tires, shopping carts, furniture, and plastics. With the help of La Salle HS Green Team students and community volunteers the creek is being revived. Volunteers will be planting native plants near the new Monterey Ave road extension.

PCC Rock Creek December Community Planting Day

The PCC-Rock Creek Campus includes a 110 acre wildlife preserve. This beautiful area of oaks, wetlands and upland Douglas Fir forest is the site of extensive restoration work by PCC teachers and students as well as Clean Water Services. SOLVE is working with the campus community to enhance approximately 5 acres of wetlands and bottomland forests. Volunteers will be planting native plants, coffee bagging, and mulching.

Remove invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs to improve habitat and water quality. Tools and gloves will be provided on site. Council Creek December Community Planting Day

Council Creek is home to beaver, Red-shouldered hawks, crayfish and native fish. Volunteers will be planting this 6 acre wetland restoration site with native willow, Oregon ash, as well as native shrubs including red-osier dogwood and douglas spirea.Volunteers will also be installing coffee bags as weed barriers, placing mice guards around trees, and mulching. Native plants will help to filter stormwater, and support fish and wildlife habitat.

Organized cleanups will take place, rain or shine, the first Saturday of every month. Sign in at The Seashore Inn on the Beach, 60 N. Prom, Seaside, get your bag, and, when done, drop it in a trash receptacle along the Prom. Stay the day and enjoy our shops and restaurants.
