Stream Team Captain Training

This is a three-day training on August 25, 27 & 29. Training Schedule: Tuesday, August 25, 6-8:30 pm at the SOLVE office: stewardship, watershed basics, restoration strategies, and examples. Thursday, August 27, 6-8:30 pm at the SOLVE office: community involvement, working w/ volunteers, work-party management, and leadership techniques. Saturday, August 29, 10am - 3pm: FIELD DAY - Location To Be Determined: project examples, planting techniques, invasive plant removal techniques, and native plant identification. Stream Team Captains lead volunteers on stream restoration and enhancement projects throughout the Portland-metro area. SOLVE adopts restoration sites for three to five years working with volunteers, community groups, crews, agencies and other non-profit partners to improve the health and function of stream corridors and wetlands. Stream Team Captains provide leadership, organization and supervision to volunteers for Saturday morning events. Stream Team Captains also instruct volunteers in invasive plant removal techniques and proper planting techniques while working closely with SOLVE staff to fulfill stream restoration and enhancement goals. Upon completion of this training, Stream Team Captains commit to lead at least three Team Up volunteer events involving planting native species, invasive plant removal, native plant identification, mulching, and watering. Additional training in basic botany, bioengineering, advanced classes in native and invasive plant ID, as well as winter twig ID are also available to Stream Team Captains during the course of the year.

Special Events at Cathlapotle Plankhouse on the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge

"The Confluence Project, Exploring History, culture, and ecology along the Columbia River

12pm - 4pm: Plankhouse Tours and Children's Activities
Tour the Plankhouse on your own or guided by our experienced volunteers. Children's activities will be available, and Refuge binoculars will be available to use on the trail.

1:00 pm: Naturalist Led Hike
2:00pm: The Confluence Project, Exploring History, culture, and ecology along the Columbia River, Presented by Colin Fogarty, Executive Director, the Confluence Project.

Cost: Refuge admission is $3 per vehicle

At 2:00 pm, Join Confluence Executive Director, Colin Fogarty, at the Cathlapotle Plankhouse as he shares the ways that the Confluence is connecting people to place through art and education. By collaborating with Northwest communities, tribes and celebrated artist Maya Lin, Confluence is able to share stories of the Columbia River through six public art installations, educational programs, community engagement, and digital experiences. At 1:00pm join a Refuge Naturalist for a hike down the Oaks to Wetlands trail, and learn about the plants and animals that call the Refuge home. From 12-4, the Plankhouse will be open for visitors, and there will be activities for families to connect with the culture and wildlife at the plankhouse. You can also check out the ample wildlife watching opportunities on the River 'S' Unit Auto Tour Driving Route. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Cathlapotle Plankhouse, and the house will now be open weekends from12pm-4pm. Every second Sunday of the month the Plankhouse will host a special event with speakers, guided hikes, and children's activities. Funding for these programs has been generously provided by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, the Community Foundation for SW Washington, and Umpqua Bank. 

The Cathlapotle Plankhouse is a modern Chinookan Plankhouse built to interpret the Chinookan village of Cathlapotle that once existed on what is today Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge property.  At the time Lewis and Clark visited Cathlapotle, it had 14 large plankhouses and a population of over 900 people.  The modern Cathlapotle Plankhouse is used to provide educational programs to youth and the general public through our Lifeways, Landscapes, and Wildlife Interpretive Program.  To learn more about the Plankhouse visit www.ridgefieldfriends.org or contact Sarah Hill at Sarah_Hill@fws.gov or (360) 887-4106.

The Columbia Slough Watershed Council works to connect the commnity with the watershed through restoration, recreation and education. Be a part of our mission by joining our Volunteer Outreach Team!

Outreach volunteers represent the Columbia Slough Watershed Council at farmers markets, paddling festivals, street fairs and outdoor festivals all around North and North East Portland. The Outreach Team shares our mission to foster action to protect, enhance, restore and revitalize the Slough with the community. Volunteers engage event-goers in conversation, field questions about the organization and its events and provide general enthusiasm around all things Slough-related! New to the Slough? It's ok! We'll train you.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Enthusiastically represent the Council at various festivals and events
  • Engage in conversation with the public around Council events and programs
  • Maintain and care for outreach materials

Cathlapotle Plankhouse Docent Training

The Plankhouse is a very popular spring and summer destination, educating and inspiring visitors from all over the Nation and even the World.  Attend this training to gain skills to lead the public through this traditional Chinookan-style Plankhouse.  

Docents work on the weekends with visitors and/or during the week with school groups.  Topics include culture, history, and the everyday life of the indigenous people of the lower Columbia River.

Plant Off a Victory!

November 2014 -- The Intertwine Plant Off on Saturday, Nov. 1, was a smashing success. Two teams of youth organizers led tree-planting events at Dirksen Nature Park and Blue Lake Park. Members of the Sugar Skulls on the west side, and the Green Team on the east, received real-world job experience (and pay) for their participation -- along with a free pair of KEENs each! Daycation App

September 2014 -- The Daycation App, a tool The Intertwine Alliance and partners are developing to inspire engagement with our region’s natural spaces, parks and trails, recently received significant funding -- $150,000 -- from Waste Management. Two app committees are meeting regularly: one focusing on content development, the other on the technical aspects of the app. Developers Harlo Interactive and Frank Creative gave an update of the app's features to the Core Group at the September meeting.

Planning for Plant Off Under Way

September 2014 -- The tree-planting project that was part of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) grant that The Intertwine Alliance received in 2013 is well under way with two teams of teens recruiting community volunteers to participate; they will give a report at the fall summit on Nov 14. Communications Advisory Committee Meets Oct. 10

September 2014 -- Intertwine Alliance staff have pulled together an initial group to form the core of a Communications Advisory Committee, with a first meeting scheduled for Oct. 10. This committee will help us develop strategy for rolling out the Our Common Ground Campaign and other marketing/messaging-related activities.

David Harrelson will speak about The Native People of the Tualatin River, Past, Present and Future Directions.

David Harrelson is Kalapuya and a member of The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon. David works for his community as the Program Manager of the Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) at Grand Ronde. David's interests include the cultural use of plants, contact era history of the Pacific Northwest, and maintenance of ecological systems through traditional land management.

This talk is presented as a cooperative effort of Tigard Library, Tualatin Riverkeepers and The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon.
