Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge
Venue Details:
Just a few short miles from the center of Oregon's largest city, the honking of geese replaces the honking of cars. This special place is a refuge, a haven for wildlife and people. Born of a community's dream, and made possible by their support, a wildlife refuge now thrives in the backyard of a growing metropolis. Located on the outskirts of Portland, Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge is one of only a handful of urban national wildlife refuges in the country. Situated within the floodplain of the Tualatin River, the Refuge comprises less than 1% of the 712 square mile watershed. Yet, due to it's richness and diversity of habitats, the Refuge supports some of the most abundant and varied wildlife in the watershed. The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Refuge has also become a place where people can experience and learn about wildlife and the places they call home.

Native Planting at Smith Memorial Church in Fairview

Saturday, December 8, 2012 - 9:00am to 12:00pm
Columbia Slough Watershed Council
Address:
2040 Fairview Ave
Fairview, OR 97230
United States

Over the last two months the Columbia Slough Watershed Council, Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church and volunteers have been working very hard on revitalizing the portion of Fairview Creek on the Church Property. In September – in conjunction with “No-Ivy Day” we cleared over 350 sq. feet of English ivy, Blackberry and other invasive plants throughout the site. During our second visit in October, the Rain Garden was expanded to over double its original size, and sheet mulching was started in preparation for the Pollinator Garden that will be planted in the spring.

However, this time at Smith Memorial, we will be planting three small planting areas in the restoration area (on the bank above Fairview creek). Species will include: vine maple, Oregon ash, tall Oregon grape, sword fern, thimbleberry, red elderberry, snowberry, red osier dogwood, Pacific ninebark, and willow species. We hope to plant 358 plants at this planting event! Come out, and help protect your Watershed!

Live Stake Planting at Conifer Parks

Saturday, November 17, 2012 - 9:00am to 12:00pm
Columbia Slough Watershed Council
Address:
143 Southeast 205th Place
Gresham, OR 97030
United States

This site represents more than four acres of ongoing habitat restoration efforts. Restoration began in 2010 with a small section of stream-side property; turf and weeds were removed and replaced with several hundred native plants, forming a thin but beautiful riparian buffer along the Conifer Park Home Owners Association walking path. On November 17th, we will be planting the treated areas - live stakes of cottonwood, willows, and red osier dogwood. This will be one our biggest plantings to date where we hope to plant several thousand plants over the next few months. Come on out and help protect and revitalize our watershed!
