Ready to have fun and plant some trees?  Please arrive around 8:45am to be registered and assigned to a crew. The planting will start promptly at 9:00am. We provide breakfast snacks and hot chocolate/coffee, as well as gloves, tools and guidance. Please come dressed for the weather and wearing sturdy shoes and get ready to have fun!

Friends of Trees is teaming up with the city of Tualatin and Clean Water Services as part of the ambitious Tree for All campaign. The goal of Tree for All is to plant two million trees in the Tualatin River basin in twenty years! This is the second year Friends of Trees has worked at Nyberg Creek and we are excited to build towards the goal of two million trees. This area is a wetland, please wear rubber boots if you have them!

No Ivy Day at Gateway Green

Join us October 13, 2012 from 9am to noon at Gateway Green for No Ivy Day. Gateway Green’s 12 wooded acres are currently dominated by English ivy, an aggressive and invasive specie. Help build on previous volunteers efforts by saving trees in immediate danger of being killed by ivy. Volunteers will focus on “Girdling”, cutting a solid ring of the ivy at both knee height and chest height, and pulling ivy away from the base of trees.

Directions

  • If you take MAX, the red, blue and green lines run directly to the Gateway transit stop.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle access is available from the northern and southern edges via the I-205 multi-use path.
  • From downtown Portland - take I-84 east to exit 7 Halsey St., keep left on ramp, take slight right onto NE Halsey St., 1st right onto NE 102nd Ave., right onto NE Pacific St. to park and ride parking lot.
  • I-205 south toward I-84/Portland/Salem, take Glisan St. exit 21A, left onto NE Glisan St., left onto NE 102nd Ave., left onto NE Pacific to park and ridge parking lot.

Free Basketry Workshop

Tired of seeing English Ivy take over natural areas and push out native plants? Wish it could be used to make something both beautiful and useful? You’re in luck! Rewild Portland will be holding a special ivy pull and ivy basketry workshop during Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge's annual celebration, BirdFest. The restoration event will be on the Saturday, October 13th, on the Carty Unit of the Refuge. From 9am to 11am, join the folks from Rewild Portland as they pull English Ivy and help restore refuge habitat. From 12 - 4, they will be teaching workshop participants how to turn the ivy pulled into artful and utilitarian baskets. Both the pull and the workshop are on a drop in basis, so feel free to join for the pull, the workshop, or both!

Do you want to help bring salmon back to Salmon Creek? Clark Public Utilities StreamTeam will be training leaders to coordinate a group of planting volunteers during events. The team leader will demonstrate event activities at Make a Difference Day (Oct 27th) and/or Earth Day (April 20th) while educating volunteers and fostering a safe and enjoyable environment.
