Join us for a day of fun and learning at Family Fun on the Farm day. School is out for the day and you're invited to Sauvie Island Center's Family Farm Day on Friday, October 9th from 10 am to noon. We'll explore the 16-acre Sauvie Island Organics farm and the grounds of Howell Territorial Park while learning about food, farming and the land. Our staff will guide you and your family through an exploration of our curriculum, designed for elementary school-aged children, including:

• Soil Exploration. Dig in and learn about healthy soil.
• Seed to Harvest. Plant, tend and harvest the Grow Lunch Garden.
• Healthy Snacks. Taste fresh veggies that you can use at home to create yummy snacks!
• Plant Parts Investigation. Explore the farm and plants we can eat.
• Wildlife & Food web. Who else has been foraging on the farm?
• Pollination Station. Meet these hard-working farm friends.

The event is free, but pre-registration is requested.

A growing body of evidence demonstrates that direct exposure to nature is good for our psychological and emotional health, yet the focus of most traditional therapies stops at the urban boundary. This workshop focuses on broadening and deepening the practice of psychotherapy by extending the psychotherapeutic context to include the natural world in which we live.

Participants will survey the empirical evidence in support of ecotherapeutic practices, discuss the triadic relationship of therapist, client, and nature, and discuss ethical considerations associated with ecotherapy.

Learning Objectives:
After participating in this workshop, you will be able to integrate ecotherapy practices into your office or agency setting by:

• Learning specific questions to expand intake interviews that account for the human-nature relationship
• Making use of nature metaphor and imagery in a therapeutic context
• Assigning nature-based homework to clients
• Making use of a Nature Language (an articulation of human/nature interaction patterns) to deepen and strengthen your therapeutic work with clients
• Understanding the value of adding natural elements into your office setting

Patricia Hasbach, Ph.D. is a clinician in private practice in Eugene, Oregon; a facultymember at Lewis & Clark College and Antioch University Seattle; and a consultant and trainer on various topics related to the human-nature relationship.

Volunteers will be planting native trees and shrubs at this new site! Rock Creek is an important tributary of the Clackamas River. Rock Creek is home to salmon, beaver, and Osprey. Volunteers will be planting native trees like western red cedar, and native shrubs like thimbleberry. Volunteers will also be installing coffee bags as a weed barrier and mulching.Planting native trees and shrubs will help shade the stream, prevent erosion and improve fish and wildlife habitat.

Dahl Beach is located at the confluence of the Clackamas and Willamette rivers. The confluence is an important location for both juvenile and adult salmon. Osprey can often be seen in the area. This native tree planting project is part of a larger stream restoration project initiated by the Clackamas River Basin Council. Volunteers will be planting native trees like western red cedar, and native shrubs like salmonberry and indian plum. Volunteers will also be mulching and installing live willow stakes. Native plantings help filter pollutants, provide shade, and improve fish and wildlife habitat.
