Family Nature Walk at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge

Join a Refuge Naturalist and take a walk along the Oaks to Wetlands trail to discover the wildlife that calls the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge home.

This hike is one of several activities that will be happening this day to kick off the Spring Opening of the Cathlapotle Plankhouse, including a spring wild foods hike, and from 12-4 Plankhouse tours and other Children's activities. 

The Cathlapotle Plankhouse is a contemporary Chinookan style Plankhouse located on the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. The house was built in 2005 as a partnership with the Chinook Indian Nation, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Friends of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Its mission is to share the lifeways, culture, and history of Chinookan Peoples of the Lower Columbia, and the natural resources of the Refuge.

Have fun, learn, and help out at Columbia Springs! This family-friendly event is a great opportunity for community members to participate in environmental restoration and projects that improve Columbia Springs' 100-acre natural area and the historic Vancouver Trout Hatchery. Projects may include gardening, painting, trail maintenance, and more. Every Stewardship Saturday includes a lesson about local ecology to start the day and concludes with a fun activity like a craft or nature hike. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome! Children under 14 are welcome with parent or guardian supervision and teens under 16 with parent or guardian permission. Snacks and tools provided. Please bring sturdy shoes, appropriate outdoor work clothing, a water bottle, and your enthusiasm for helping the community! Kids Fishing Festival at Columbia Springs

Let's go fishing! Join us for a day of fun for the whole family including kids' activities, barbeque lunch, and fishing for kids age 5-14. Fishing participants are given a free fishing pole with tackle and are guaranteed to catch a trout to take home. $5 per person registration fee includes lunch, access to festival activities, and fishing pole to take home for children ages 5-14. Space is limited and participants must register to fish during one of the open hour-long timeslots; 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. is reserved for kids with special needs. Registration opens on March 18th. Portland is teeming with owl activity in the springtime months. If you love owls, come out to Tryon Creek State Natural Area for a full day of Owl Celebration! Enjoy activities for the entire family including Owl Journaling with Jude Siegel, owl crafts, owl pellet dissection, owl presentations, guided hikes, snacks donated by Clif Bar, and close-up encounters with the Audubon education owls, Hazel and Julio!

 

This is a free event, no pre-registration needed (except where noted). Parking is limited, please consider carpooling.

This event will be held at the main pavilion at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds. In a few short hours, we'll sell hundreds of rootstocks, give away thousands of scions, graft untold numbers of trees, complete our Make-A-Tree orders, and help lots of folks launch into the pleasure of growing good fruit at home!
