The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is happy to be celebrating Earth Day with Portland Parks and Recreation and SOLVE! Celebrate with us by helping remove invasive English Ivy from the Wilkes Creek headwaters. English Ivy out competes native plant species for resources like light and water, but once it is under control we can start to actively restore this valuable headwater ecosystem. No experience is necessary, just a desire to get your hands dirty!

This event runs rain or shine. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring water, rain gear and sturdy shoes. Snacks, tools, training and gloves will be provided. This is a great event for groups and individuals. Registration requested.

Address:
Force Lake

Looking to participate in Earth Day? Join the Council and Friends of Force Lake for this very special Earth Day clean up event! Volunteers have helped restore the ecological community of Force Lake with clean-up and planting events over multiple seasons. If you've volunteered at Force Lake before, come out again and check on the native dogwoods we planted in October. First time volunteers are welcome, too! We need many hands to help plant natives, remove invasive weeds, clean up litter and cage trees (to protect them from beavers!) With your help, we can make the Force Lake community healthier than ever before.

This is a great event for families and groups. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring water, rain gear and sturdy shoes. Snacks, tools, training and gloves will be provided. Registration requested.

Stewardship Saturday: Peninsula Crossing Trail

Saturday, March 22, 2014 - 10:00am to 1:00pm
Columbia Slough Watershed Council
Address:
Peninsula Crossing Trail at N. Columbia Blvd
5650 N. Columbia Blvd
Portland, OR 97203
United States

You can help us plant natives along the Peninsula Crossing Trail in north Portland! The Peninsula Crossing Trail is the only north-south recreational trail along the north Portland peninsula. With your help, we can increase the cover of native plants and help keep the trail clean and welcoming for our north Portland neighbors. Native plants along the trail help to filter polluted stormwater runoff from nearby roads and parking lots. This in turn keeps both the Slough and our groundwater in healthier condition.

Tools, training, gloves and snacks will be provided. Volunteers will want to dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Registration requested.

Interested in planting native trees and shrubs? Meeting some neat people? Or obtaining a few service learning hours? Then join us at Pendarvis Farm in Damascus on Saturday, March 15th!

Join the Rock Creek Partnership on Saturday, March 15th in Happy Valley for its third annual Watershed Wide Event! We’ll be removing invasive vegetation, mulching, and planting native trees and shrubs at three streamside sites to help improve the water quality in the Rock Creek basin -- and we’d love your help! No experience is necessary and we welcome families, neighbors, and friends!

This is a popular event and space is limited. Please save your space by filling out this online form: Rock Creek Watershed Wide Event 2014

There will be live music, a delicious variety of breakfast and lunch provided to volunteers, and raffle prizes! The staging site will once again be the Galaxy Barn at Pendarvis Farm - site of the renowned Pickathon Music Festival. The event will begin promptly at 9:00am, so we ask for everyone to arrive by 8:45am to the staging site to get registered and assigned to a crew, as well as to enjoy hot coffee and breakfast treats. The event will wrap-up around 1:00pm.

Rock Creek is an important tributary of the Clackamas River, which provides high quality drinking water to more than 300,000 people and provides critical habitat for many sensitive species of plants, fish and wildlife.

The Rock Creek Partnership works with landowners to revitalize streamside habitats by removing invasive species, such as blackberry and ivy, and replanting the areas with native vegetation. Restoring native plant communities grows a canopy over our creeks, which filters drinking water, provides wildlife habitat, and increases property value.
